At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports that Continental troops are moving toward the British on the North (Hudson) River. Discusses William's upcoming voyage, a mercantile venture to Holland. Declares, "From the high Spirits of our troops, their discipline, and equipments, I think if we come into contact with the Enemy we shall at least do justice to ourselves and Country whatever may be the Event." Mentions Lucy Knox and their daughters (Lucy and Julia). Notes that the Winslow sisters have not yet left for Boston.

My dear Brother
We are now moving on toward the Enemy on the North River - Therefore I cannot at present answer your Letter of the 20th ultimo particularly - In General I think as you do with respect to your intended voyage - Secure the effects remaining - I think it wil be well worth the Expences of transportation to have them carried into the Country - From the [2] high spirits of our troops, their discipline, and equipments, I think if we come into contact with the Enemy we shall at least do justice to ourselves and Country whatever may be the Event - Mrs Knox and her babes are getting well - Miss Winslows do not go to Boston yet - and of Consequence not the Phaeton which is sold here -
