Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Nichols, Captain of Artillery Artificers, certifies that John Tharp, an artificer in his company, enlisted 27 November 1776, and "has never receved [sic] any gratuities from any state, nor bounties, excepting the Continental Bounty of Twenty Dollars, and the Hundred Dollars Bounty alowed by Congress to those Inlisted [sic] During the war."
