At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Dunham promises to pay Samuel Shaw, aide-de-camp to Henry Knox, $2,860.60. Shaw signs on verso 18 March 1780, noting, "Please to pay within to Capt. Finley." Shaw also signs 29 June 1780, with a note that states "Please to pay the within to the Bearer."
