At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Resolution stating that "the Officers & Men of the Regiment of Artillery Artificiers have the same pay from after the 1st of August, in Bill, of the new Emissions as was originally fixed in Bills of the then Emissions, by the Regulations of the Department made by Congress on the 11th of February 1778 & that they draw the Number of Rations there directed." Noted as an extract from General Order. In the hand of, and signed by, Henry Knox's aide, John Doughty.
