Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Ruddock, Deputy Commissary of Military Stores at Fishkill, attests that Waterman served with "fidelity." Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide, signs a note on verso confirming that Waterman is entitled to his pay. Shaw signs 13 February 1783 at West Point on behalf of General Henry Knox.
