Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hughes, Deputy Quartermaster General at Fishkill, responds to a letter from Knox regarding moving the artillery park (GLC02437.01027). Discusses the upcoming campaign Colonel Timothy Pickering, Quartermaster General, and Henry Knox. Writes, "... my Situation is truly disagreeable, as I have neither been furnished with Orders, nor Means to answer your Demands."

Knox was making preparations for the proposed recapture of New York from the British.
