Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Major Bauman, the commander of artillery at West Point, to Brigadier General Knox. Says Lieutenant Colonel Popkins has arrived to replace him and asks to be transfered to relieve his "lazy habit, according to the predominant Custom of West Point." Wants to deal with family affairs before his new duties though.
