Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Expresses unhappiness with his post because of the limited action and requests a transfer should an opening occur. He has also mentioned this desire to Colonel David Cobb, formerly Jackson's second in command. Mentions tentative plans to visit Lucy, Knox's wife. Knox's response written in Philadelphia Pennsylvania appears on the verso. General George Washington ordered General Benjamin Lincoln to lead the American Army south to invest Yorktown, and Jackson is ordered to join him. Verso is a Henry Knox autograph letter signed dated 30 August 1781 to Colonel John Lamb.

Jackson commanded the 16th Massachusetts Regiment.

Dear Colonel,
There are a great quantity of stores at this place to be shipped for Christiana Bridge and nobody to do it. His Excellency Genl Washington has written to Genl Lincoln for 100 infantry for that purpose & he has directed me to order same artillery men
You will please therefore to order here by the same conveyance by which General Lincoln shall order the infantry, 40 or 50 Artillery men, and at least six continental officers - The service is urgent for which reason you will please to direct the utmost expedition in coming here
