[draft]
Camp before York, 1 Octbr 1781
I was made happy my dearest and only love by your letter by Mr Custis which I received Yesterday. I am pleas'd with the disposition you made of our little daughter, and to hear of the health of master Hal who Mr Custis says is a monstrous fine fellow.
We came before York on the 28th on the 29 nearly completed the investiture, but Yesterday the Enemy evacuated their out posts which gives us a considerable advantage in point of time. Our prospects are good & we shall soon hope to impress our haughty foe with a respect for the combined arms. I have been perfectly well since [2] I have been in Virginia. I pray You to present my respectful compliments to Mrs Washington
I am my dearest hope
Your affectionate
