Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Chart enumerating supplies of musical instruments and their quality held by various regiments under General William Heath. A note at the bottom indicates that "Fifes are Exceedingly wanted." Hiwell was a first Lieutenant in a Massachusetts Artillery regiment. Heath commanded Highlands Department on the east side of the lower Hudson River. Written in "Continental Village."
