At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Communicates orders from General George Washington to expeditiously load all the stores that are being transported to Head Of Elk, Maryland onto vessels. Anything that cannot fit should be loaded onto French ships. The ordnance being transported had been used in the siege of Yorktown. Probably intended for Henry Knox. Docket written in Henry Knox's hand. Cobb was an aide-de-camp to Washington.

Dear Sir
His Excellency requests you to forward the loading of Artillery & all the stores you intend sending to the Head of Elk, with all the expedition you can, & whatever you cannot load aboard the small Vessels, you may have an oppertunity of putting on [struck: board] the French Vessels - As the Gen.ll is anxious to have all matters here accomidated, he wishes you to have every thing on board immediately that you intend carrying -
