Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks that Knox provide him with a horse or approve of him obtaining one. Lost his horse "before York" (possibly meaning in battle), and cannot afford another. Wants to borrow a horse in order to travel to Boston: "As I have no other way of getting to Boston to see and provide for my family, & as we are disapointed in our expectations of receiving regular payments, they require my presence to point out some mode for their future support while I am in the service of my country." Promises to return the horse in good working order.
