Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from Head Quarters. Humphreys writes, "His Excellency [George Washington] desires you will please to order Ammunition & Flints to be issue to the remainder of Col. Weissenfel's [probably Frederick Weisenfels, Lieutenant-Colonel New York Levies] Regt of Levies of the State of New York, for which order the Quarter Mastr now awaits upon you." Below the note and his signature, Knox notes an order to Mr. [John] Ruddock, Commissary at Fishkill, of four thousand eight hundred musket cartridges.
