Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists the names of sutlers, or merchants who sold food and drink to troops, and lists who licensed them. Sutlers include Simon Richards, William Foot, James McMasters, Asa Spauldin, Samuel Warrin, Roger Magrath Gatsey, Mrs. Current, John Andrews, William Adams, Aaron Thompson, Able Boyington-Dunlap, Ezra Eaton, John Sullivan, and Mr. England. Licensing authorities include Generals [Alexander] McDougal, [William] Heath and [John] Paterson, and Colonels [John] Crane and Shephard [possibly William Shepard].
