Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in Bedford, in possibly one of two New York locations. Authored by a Captain Hunt of New York Levies (first initials are illegible but may be B.G.). Has received a letter from General [William] Heath of August 29th in which he is to send for a prisoner from his company to be tried on the lines. Asks Knox to send along an order for the prisoner. "On public service" written on address leaf with no signature.
