At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Unsigned, but written the hand of Samuel Shaw. Lists, by date between June and November, orders given to issuers of supplies, such as Mr. John Ruddock, Commissary at Fishkill, and Mr. Richard Frothingham, Commissary at West Point.

According to GLC02437.01601, in September 1782 Knox offered Ruddock the position of Deputy Commissary at West Point; however, the present document lists orders to Ruddock during June and August 1782, when he was still at Fishkill.
