At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signature is clipped, but docket confirms General Benjamin Lincoln, Secretary at War, as the author. Written from "War Office." Writes, "I have been honored with your letter of the 18 ultimo, informing the appointments which have been made in the field commissary's department - it was received but a few days since."
