Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written and signed for Knox in the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp. "This is to certify that Mr. Bartholemew Fisher has served the United States, as waggon-conductor to the Park of Artillery, from the year 1778 to the present time and that he is still in service. His activity, good behavior, and attention to duty, at all times, have marked him as a valuable servant of the public."
