At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Dear Sir,
I have been honoured with the receipt of your two favors of the 3d. instant - A Copy of your letter which relates to the Artificers is before Congress - I will endeavor to obtain any early decision -
Mr. Hodgdon has estimated the expence [sic] of the Paint - Oyl &c. which I have signed and have directed him to apply for a Sum of Money sufficient to procure them and have urged it by a Representation that it is a measure necessary to that economy which should mark all our public transactions
