Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document detailing number or rations given to members of the [engineering] department from 9 March - 16 March. All in all, 18 persons from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Connecticut Regiments and the 3rd Regiment of Artillery, along with 1 independent mason were given 216 rations. Note on verso signed by a Jacob Gillet.
