At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Agreably [sic] to the desire of Our Board at our last meeting I have made a Rough Draugh [sic] of a report on the business before us. I inclose [sic] it to you for your consideration & such alterations or additions as you judge necessary I shall notify the members with Col. Nicola & assemble at Mr. Erskins New Windsor the place of our last meeting on Thursday next 11 o'Clock
