Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Offers his congratulations on ending the war, while expressing his regret on not being able to congratulate him personally. "I pray the Supreme Rewarder of the good & the truly brave may bless you with the copious fruits of that peace you have by so many energies contributed to procure." Also mentions a niece whose husband is no good, "worse than widowed."
