At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Three part document. First portion issues rations to a soldier in the Invalides regiment. Signed Lewis Nicola, Constitution Island, New York 12 June 1783. Second and third portions on the verso signed by David Hillyer and Samuel Shaw respectively, both authorizing the issue of rations. Shaw signed at West Point, New York on 1 July 1783.
