Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he has received an appointment to precede Mr. Peirce (possibly referring to John Peirce, Paymaster General and Commissioner of Army Accounts) in the settlement of the Virginia line accounts. Requests that "a lad" from Colonel Swift's regiment go with Mr. Peirce. A note initialed by Samuel Shaw reads " cannot be granted."
