Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists Knox's transactions with the government for various periods from 1781 and 1782. Includes transactions for cash paid him by various men, goods delivered at Yorktown, clothing, etc. Written in Samuel Shaw's hand with a note signed by John Peirce stating that Knox received the balance.
