Signed by Edward Blake as a quartermaster of the artillery and addressed to Colonel John Crane. Provision return for a man discharged from the Massachusetts Artillery from 24-31 August 1783. The man received 7 rations over the 7 days. Docket is signed by a Jesse Jordan stating that contractors delivered the rations.
John Crane participated in the Boston Tea Party and took part in the siege of Boston as a Captain in Gridley's regiment of the Massachusetts Artillery. In December 1775 he was promoted to a major in General Henry Knox's regiment. Then in January 1777 Crane was named a colonel of the 3rd Artillery. He served at Newport, Saratoga, and at Fort Mifflin, New Jersey. In June 1783 Crane was transferred to the Corps of Artillery where he was breveted a brigadier general in September 1783. Crane resigned from the army in November 1783 and began a lumber business. After his lumber business failed Crane moved to Whiting, Maine on land he received for his war service. In 1790 he became a judge in the court of common pleas.
