Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Provision return written by Lieutenant E. J. Parker of the 1st Massachusetts Regiment. It notes that 14 men were issued a total of 210 rations from 1-15 September. Note on second page, signed by a Stephen Patterson with a mark, states that the rations were received at Newburgh, New York.
