Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain Lillie, aide-de-camp to Major General Knox, orders West Point Commissary Bell to deliver 20 pounds of beef and 20 pounds of bread for Knox and his family. Docket signed by a Jacob Johnson stating that the beef and bread were received. Ink of the document is faded.
