Discusses with Governor Clinton the preparations for the arrival of "The General" [George Washington] at Poughkeepsie, New York. Adds that he has sent his aide-de-camp John Lillie to New York, thinking that sending an aide would leave "less room for prevarication."

The unnamed general mentioned is George Washington. His expense journal indicates that he went to Poughkeepsie on November 17 for an interview with Governor Clinton [GW Papers at the Library of Congress]. Lillie had been sent to New York City by Knox to deliver his 9 November letter (GLC02437.02761) to Sir Guy Carleton and to await the British commander's response.
