Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes to Elderkin, magazine keeper for Daniel Parker & Co., a firm that furnished supplies for troops. Relates that his contract with Parker has nearly expired and no measure has been taken for its renewal. Orders Elderkin to deliver a large number of rations to the present issuing commissary at West Point.
