Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lieutenant Jefferds signs 29 December 1783 from Fort Rensselaer, Canajoharie, New York. Henry Knox signs 7 March 1784 at Dorchester, Massachusetts. Knox asserts that this return is a copy from the original forwarded to Charles Knowles, paymaster of the Massachusetts artillery. Knox was assisting Jefferds obtain pay for himself and his men.
