Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Offers sentiments of friendship. Written at the "Louvre." Contains a note, written later in pencil at the bottom of the page: "This was a house in the present 57th in NY- why called the 'Louvre' is not known. Steuben was living there at the date of this letter. Kapp's life of Steuben 178." Year from docket.
