At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Encloses "as near a copy as I could make of our address to the Indians," possibly referring to a recent address he and Knox made to the Penobscots in present-day Maine. Discusses copying documents related to former Governor [Thomas] Pownall's interactions with Native Americans. Asks Knox to edit the documents he transmits.

Dear Sir
The inclosed is as near a copy as I could make, of our address to the Indians, from my rough [minutes] & from my memory - If upon examination you discover any errors you will please to correct them - My son will sign our Report for me - would it not be well to copy [inserted: ye whole of] Governor Pownall doings with the Indians thereby you may [retain] the book in your own hands [reference] should be had to ye copy in the report -
I have no acco: to give in for when ye vessel was cleared there were some things left which were carried to my House and an acco: taken of them this acco: & the money I paid [aftward] [2] I will settle with Mr Devens who should be directed by the General Court to pay for the hire of the packet my son should call on Mr Lincoln who will be in town, for his acco -
If upon a further examination of the report draughted you find any omissions & or errors you will be so good as to [struck: correct them] supply ye one & correct ye other
