At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sullivan, the Governor of New Hampshire, writes that based on their long acquaintance and friendship, he takes the liberty to introduce his good friend Paine Wingate, delegate to Congress from New Hampshire. Writes that "he is a stranger in New York and I shall esteem it a great favor if you will please to make him acquainted with some of the first characters there. You will find him the scholar the Gentleman, and the man of sense every mark of attention paid to him by you will be gratefully acknowledged."

Relying on that Long acquaintance and friendship which has happily subsisted between us I take the Liberty of introducing to your Excellency's particular notice and acquaintance my very good friend The honorable pain Wingate Esqr. Delegate from this State to Congress he is a stranger in New York and I shall esteem it a great favor if you will please to make him acquainted with some of the first Characters there - you will find him the Scholar the Gentleman and the man of Sense every mark of attention [paid] to him by you will be gratefully acknowledged by Sir your Excellencys most obedient and very humble Servt
