At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes a brief report on the status of Shays and his troops. Refers Knox to several letters he has enclosed, in order to get a fuller picture of the story. However, as he has very little time, writes that he must wait till the next opportunity to say more.

Springfield Jany 28th 1787

I was my dear sir the last evening honoured with the receipt of your favor of the 21st instant
With the greatest pleasure I would give you a very [illegible] acct- of our transactions since I left Boston but as we shall remove today I must content my self with inclosing copies of letters first to the Governour by them you will learn the most material facts- I also must refer you to Mr. Jacksons letter to Mr. King where you will find many particulars.
We left Boston Saturday morning the 20th instant about six oclock, arrived in Worcester Monday the 22d; left it Thursday and arrived here yesterday-
We shall march at 2 oclock, on for Amherst where I am informed Shays is with his whole force- I hope to come up with him by two oclock in ye afternoon
