Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Has "applied personally to the collector of the customs who says that there are so many" previous applicants to the department that there is "no probability of your obtaining any place." Does not have any openings at his disposal, and does not know of any openings. Would cheerfully help to place him if he could. Unsigned, but authorship inferred from handwriting.
