At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that the arrangements of the Massachusetts artillery are completed and all the vacancies filled. Notes he will mention Cooper's request to Col. [Henry] Jackson. In a different hand, noted as written at "W. O.," which most likely stands for War Office. The War Office was located in New York City at that time. Also noted as "Private" on the docket.
