Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists payments made to the Society of the Cincinnati by the state societies "in consequence of the requisition of the General meeting" in May 1787. Includes an additional docket dated in 1791 listing individuals to whom "an eagle" was sold (a reference to the Society of the Cincinnati medal).
