Informs Knox that he finally obtained $500 to pay two companies of artillery marching to Springfield, Massachusetts. The soldiers were ordered to protect the Springfield armory, and Jackson expects them to arrive at Springfield on 21 June 1787. Reports that he used his own money to pay for the troops' clothing, noting, "...if I had not taken this measure, the men at this moment would have been naked." Stamped "Boston" on the address leaf. My dear Harry

Your public Letter of the 9th and private one of the 10th Inst. I recd - this Eveng by the post -
I have procurred five hundred dollars out of the Bank, which sum I propose to distribute to the two Companies - I have orderd them to March on Saturday Morning the 16.th & they will arrive at Springfield on the 21st Inst - I shall calculate on receiving the 498 dollars from Major North as the 500 dollars I borrowed from the Bank on my own Account -
for the whole of the cloathing [2] cloathing, I have become personally obligated, by giving my private Note of hand, payable in three & four months from the date - it was not possible to procure [one] article on the public Faith & if I had not taken this measure, the men at this moment would have been naked -
I will see Mr. Winslow on the business you mention - & will write you Sunday - Mrs & Mr Swan, with the rest of your friends send their love to you & Lucy -
