Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mrs. Seton asks Knox for "Miss's [present] quarter," and encloses receipts for both quarters (not present). Explains that she needs the money to put toward another bill she must pay that day.

Mrs. Seton may be asking Knox to pay tuition for the schooling of one of Knox's daughters.
