Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Lewis to deliver Mr. [George] Joy's "deposition respecting Mr. [Daniel] Parker having directed him [Mr. Joy] to pay the money which Mr. Parker took out of the funds of the Ship Empress of China in New York in the beginning of the year 1784 ..." Also asks Lewis to deliver a copy of a paper containing Parker's signature in regards to his [Parker's] conduct on a particular occasion. Says Mr. [Thomas] Randall, who is Samuel Shaw's partner, is wishing to have the matter closed as soon as possible.

Parker was part-owner of the ship, Empress of China, which was the first American ship to sail to China on a trading venture. He also was a contractor for the army during the American Revolution.
