Writes a letter of introduction for a Lieutenant John Lovell. Reports that Lovell has studied law and seems interested in pursuing a career in the artillery. Adds that any help Knox might offer Lovell would be greatly appreciated.

my dear Harry
The bearer of this Lt. John Lovell is a son of James Lovell Esqr of this Town, and was appointd a Lieutenant in the Federal Troops raised by this State- he is a Young Gentleman of real abilities and great merit- for several years past has studied Law under our friend Thos. Dawes Junr Esqr. he is a [text loss]tary Man & is very desirous of making [text loss] change with Lt. Fowle of the Artillery [text loss] goes on West point for that purpose Mr. Fowle having given him some encouragement on this head, and I believe it may be effected provided it meets with your approbation. If there is no impropriety in this business & you can assist him, I pledge myself the [excharged] proposed will be much to the advantage of the public.
