Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in the hand of Henry Knox. Brett encloses "an estimate of the expence of clothing from one man to eight hundred..." for Maunsell to forward to General Henry Knox, Secretary at War. Notes that Maunsell recommended him as an agent for procuring soldiers' clothing for Knox. Title from docket.

Brett was a British naval captain, and Maunsell was a British army officer.
