Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox congratulates Harwood on her nuptials. Comments on his own marriage: "I have read yr letter to Lucy with great pleasure- her memory seems to have led her into [scrape]- She forgot that she married one Henry Knox of Cornhill, Boston- She was a sad tory then and is but a bad republican now..."

Hannah Flucker was a sister of Lucy Knox. She married for the first time to James Urquhart circa 1774, and then was divorced. She married a second time, to Richard Harwood, circa 1788.
