Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes to Parsons, Varnum, and Symmes, the first judges of the Northwest Territory. Introduces Thomas H. Cushing, who served in the army during the Revolutionary war and plans to settle in the Northwest Territory. Recommends Cushing for the position of clerk of the court for the Northwest Territory. Docketed as a "Copy of a Circular letter."
