Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In the hand of William Knox. Replies to a letter from Faesch in which Faesch informed Knox of the death of his wife (GLC02437.03808). Offers Faesch his deepest sympathy and condolences, writing: "We suffer excessive misery at the loss of our dearest connections, but time sooth's and pours his balm into our wounds- We find we must, and that it is truly wise to submit patiently to events we can neither command or avert." Noted as a copy in the docket.

During the Revolution, Faesch produced supplies and ammunition for the Continental army, and was a civic leader and a country judge following the war.
