Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An unknown recipient received from Captain Henry Burbeck "ten shillings york currency for the purpose of defreying my expences for two men from W. Point into the country in pursuit of Livi Hunter and Joseph Griffin deserters from the Federal Artillery." Includes an account balance on verso.

Burbeck served in the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. He commanded at West Point 1787-1789.
