Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Huntington, Governor of Connecticut, transmits to Knox a copy of a letter he had previously erroneously sent to New York (Knox was at Boston). Asks for Knox's approval for Dr. Knight to fill in for Dr. Summer at his post in the Western frontier (refer to GLC02437.03959 for Huntington's earlier request).
