Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly to her daughter, Lucy. Contains four large areas of text loss. Writes, "I begin to count the hours until I shall have the pleasure to embrace you... may god bless you my precious daughter." Possibly to another daughter; in one partial sentence, she writes, "be sure to give my love to my name[text loss]."
