Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Declares that Congress, on 11 December 1780, ordered the Board of Treasury to provide a sum of 3200 dollars to Mr. William Palfrey, Paymaster General, and that the money was drawn upon Benjamin Franklin (see GLC02437.04175 for related information). Possibly written in Nourse's hand.
